Goal Setting Strategies - Intermediate Level

The previous article* talked about SMARTER goals.

8 Inch Tv Monitor

S = Specific - the more specific the aim, the easier it is to know when you have achieved it
M = Measurable - if the goal and progress can't be measured how will you know how far you still have to go?
A = Attainable - aim for the stars but you can't jump that high so your plan needs to be achievable
R = Realistic and Relevant - you need to know how success or failure will affect you
T = Time bound - without a time bond on the goal it becomes an open-ended dream
E = Evaluate - exactly what do you want, when do you want it and what will be the proof that you have achieved it?
R = Re-evaluate - as you progress along your path, constant monitor and control systems are required

Now I want to move on to the next level. This is the goal setting strategies you could use to ensure that you remain focussed on your goal in order to ensure that your chances of success are multiplied.

Most of the this article relates to the goal setting strategy of focussing your unconscious mind on your set goals. Firstly, you need to grasp the concept that the PRIMARY purpose and focus of your unconscious mind is to keep you alive.

It is kept busy all day and all night functioning with this primary purpose. It continues to address this purpose when you are busy, distracted, asleep or even unconscious. Every single chemical action and reaction happening in your body is being monitored by your unconscious mind so that it can make any necessary adjustment required to keep you alive.

It does not have a great deal of time for your whims and although it hears every single thought you have it assesses those thoughts only in terms of keeping you alive. With that fact in mind, let's discuss goal setting strategies.

1. Less is more. You might have goals in a number of different areas in your life and that is great. However, it is not practical to try to work on a number of different areas at the same time. It is best to focus on one thing at a time.

For example, you may wish to lose weight and to quit smoking - and these should be renamed as achieving desired weight and freeing yourself from your addiction to nicotine, but more of that later.

You will have a greater chance of success if you decide on the one that would make most difference to your life and focus completely on that. Both goals are admirable and both involve simply changing a habit. Why not achieve your desired weight first, note down what worked for you and use those lessons to tackle your smoking issue once you have achieved your target weight?

The more goals that you have the less you can focus on each one and that effectively dilutes the effort and the ultimate result. You have got time. When you have two goals that you wish to achieve within a given time period you can easily complete one and then the other within that time.

At a more advanced level you can work a number of goals together as long as they can work in conjunction. You just have a primary, secondary and tertiary goals. As long as they are congruent you can work on them at the same but have your primary focus in mind at all times. Once achieved, move to the secondary focus

2. Commit your goals to paper and be as specific as possible. Your thoughts pass through your synapses in seconds. The simple act of writing your goals onto paper focuses your unconscious mind on the goal. And I really do mean WRITE THE GOAL ON PAPER. Using your laptop to type your goals will not have the same unconscious effect on your goal.

Use the SMARTER acronym above for each of your goals and put as much detail as possible into your goal.

Your unconscious mind is like a five year old child and will achieve your goal in the simplest way possible. You might decide to achieve a goal of being surrounded by money. You and I know that you mean that you have a bulging bank account. Your unconscious mind has a lot of work to do. It keeps you breathing and it ensures your heart continues pumping blood and keeps your brain functioning so that you can read and understand this post, plus the million other second by second things that keep you alive. It does not have much time to spare ensuring that you have the luxuries in life but it will do as you command

Unless and until you specify what exactly you mean by, "being surrounded by money" your unconscious mind is as likely to put you on a downward spiral that results in you ending up in a minimum wage position as a cash security guard as it is to help you become a millionaire.

Five years down the line when you are sitting in the back of a security van escorting money to a number of local businesses you will be "surrounded by money" wondering what happened to your goals and not realising that you have achieved the goal you set.

You just weren't specific enough in relating the goal to your unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind meanwhile, has achieved its primary purpose which is to keep you alive and has also helped you to achieve your goal. It just wasn't what you envisaged.

The dilemma is that your unconscious mind is not a mind reader. It didn't know you meant bigger house, bigger car, more holidays, lots of cash in the bank, because you simply said you wanted to be surrounded by money.

Similarly, when you decide you want a bigger house you might want to ensure that you specify exactly what you mean. You and I both know you mean a house of your own with more space and more rooms. Your unconscious mind is a busy animal and just as it can misinterpret your wish to be surrounded to by money it can misinterpret, "I want to be in a bigger house".

Maybe, the downward spiral that achieved your, "surrounded by money" goal was matched by you losing your own home and ends with you renting a room in a 10 bedroom house. It isn't your house, but your unconscious mind helped you achieve your goal for sure.

3. Carry your goals around with you every day. Buy a little 3 x 2 inch notebook. Write the goals into it and carry it around with you. Whenever you get a quiet moment pull the notebook from your pocket and read the goals again. When you do this constantly and consistently you will eventually repeat your goals mentally every time you even think of the notebook.

The reason that you need to do this and to read your goals five, ten or fifty times a day is again an issue with your unconscious mind. Take a moment or two to think about how many commands you give your unconscious mind on a daily basis. How many individual thoughts do you process in any given minute, hour or day?

While typing this one paragraph I am thinking, "it's quite warm in here I need to open a window, I am a little hungry and will have a sandwich when I have finished. As soon as I think about making a sandwich I am thinking about my sandwich options and the fact that I fancy a coffee with my sandwich. Have I got any milk? Yes I have. What nonsense is that politician talking on the radio? Hmmmm that noise must be my neighbour mowing his lawn. I must remember to polish those shoes in the corner for my appointment later. It is really bright in this room. I love the sunshine and on and on and on."

You must think of thousands, maybe millions, maybe even billions of things in a given day. They may be simple musings, such as my neighbour and his lawnmower or they may be functional, such as, I will have a sandwich.

Your unconscious mind assesses every single thought and how those thoughts might have an effect on its primary purpose of keeping you alive.

Lawnmower - no problem.
Sandwich - no problem I am not starving.
Coffee - no problem I am not dying of thirst.
Bus coming - arrrrrggggghhhhhh!!! Get out of the way!!!

I want to be surrounded by money - no problem - I can get you a job as a security guard.

So I hope that you can see that only thinking about your goal once or twice a week might just get lost in the myriad other instructions and thoughts and mental traffic that you pass onto your unconscious mind on a daily basis.

When you tell your unconscious mind something fifty times a day, specifically, by pulling your notebook from your pocket and reciting the goal to yourself repetitively, it may not understand how your goal is going to keep you alive, but it will understand that it is important to you. It will then devote a little more time to helping you achieve the goal.

4. Make your goal a positive and not a negative. You might be gaining an understanding of how your unconscious mind works. It needs specifics and it will focus on the specific more than the context.

For a financial goal many people start with, "I want to get out of debt". Your unconscious mind will focus on the tangible of debt. It will not focus on the "I want to get out of....." It should not be a difficult process to work out where you will end up if you focus on debt.

When your goal is to, "quit, give up, lose" a negative habit, you have set yourself up to fail because you have put a negative spin on the goal.

For example, "I want to lose weight." Your unconscious mind has heard the word or thought, "lose" a billion times in your life so far and it has a negative attachment to the word. Remember that it is trying to keep you alive. It does not focus on losing anything. It focuses on keeping things and it is very good at that. It has a great deal of practice of keeping things and you should speak to your unconscious in the language it understands.

Plus, when you are mastering the goal setting strategy you already know you have to be specific. You have two options when writing your weight loss goal into your notebook. Option 1 - I want to lose 35 pounds. Option 2 - I want to weigh 155 pounds.

Option 1 is not a good choice. Think about it. Firstly you are focussing on a negative involving loss. Secondly, once you lose your first pound your goal is out of date and confusing to your unconscious. Do you still want to lose 35 pounds? No you don't. Now you want to lose 34 pounds. Now you need to re-programme your unconscious every time you lose a pound or even an ounce of weight.

Setting your goal at the specific, "I want to weigh 155 pounds" means that from first ounce to last ounce you have had the same goal. Less confusion for your unconscious and hourly reinforcement of the goal every time you think the thought.

5. Break your ultimate goal into mini goals. These have to be just as specific and positive as the main goal and involve common sense as far as the achievable progress. For a dietary goal you are unlikely to achieve the same results at week 20 as at week one and your goal should reflect that.

Reducing your weight by 30 pounds might be a daunting prospect. Reducing your weight by 30 pounds over 20 weeks equates to a linear 1.5 pounds per week and is less daunting. Unfortunately the last pound is harder than the first pound. When you weigh 200 pounds you have to consume a higher number of calories simply to MAINTAIN that weight you do when you weigh 171 pounds.

Your goal setting strategy needs to reflect this fact. Your plan might involve reducing your weight by 3 pounds per week each week for the first 2 weeks and then 2.5 pounds per week for the next 2 weeks. That is 11 pounds in 4 weeks and leaves you with 9 pounds in the next 16 weeks. Much easier to focus on and allows some leeway.

You might hit a plateau during weeks 8 to 10 and if your weight reduction programme centred on 1.5 pounds per week and you make no progress at the mid-stage you are piling the pressure on towards the end of the programme when it is actually harder to progress.

For a financial goal the opposite is true. Compounding interest starts to have an effect. You might decide to have 100,000 in the bank in 100 months time. For a linear goal this means putting 1000 a month in the bank.

When you do not have that capital available in month 1 the goal is non-viable. You might start off by finding a way to put 100 away each month for the first 6 months, then 200, then 400, then 500, etc.

A simple maths example. You want 1,000,000 using a simple doubling strategy and you start with 1.
Month 1 - your 1 doubles to 2
Month 2 - your 2 doubles to 4 etc

Do you know how many months this would take you to achieve the million? The answer is actually 20.

At month 10 you would have 1000. At month 15 you still only have 16000, but at month 19 you have 500,000.

Obviously it is unlikely that you will double your money month in month out but the above gives you an example of how to plan a financial goal. Towards the end of the programme you have a stash of money that working for you and earning more money towards your goal.

6. Reward yourself for achieving the mini goals. And these rewards will form part of your goal setting strategy and should also be written in your notebook.

When I have achieved X by Y date I will reward myself with Z. For example, when I have reduced my weight by ten pounds on the 30th of next month I will treat myself to a spa day.

You must ensure that the rewards are congruent to your goal. When I have reduced my weight by ten pounds I will treat myself to an enormous bar of chocolate does not quite work. When I have reduced my weight by ten pounds I will buy myself a new pair of trousers is not quite grasping the concept because your plan would mean that the trousers should not fit you by next month because they will be too big for you.

When I have put 1000 in the bank I will buy that 42" plasma TV I have always wanted sort of defeats the object, unless the plan was to save enough money to buy the TV in the first place.

Summary

1. One goal at a time until you become more skilled at goal setting strategies.

2. Commit your goal to paper and include the reward plan. At an advanced level I will talk about publicising your goals but at this stage committing the goal to paper is enough.

3. Carry them around with you. You might also consider pinning them to your shaving mirror, your fridge, your car dashboard, your briefcase, your laptop.

Anywhere that you will stare or glance during the day. The more you think about them the more your unconscious will understand their importance to you as you reinforce them.

4. Write them in the positive.

5. Mini goals to form the ultimate goal - being as specific and as SMARTER at each stage as the main goal.

6. Build in your own personal reward programme

I hope the post gives you a better insight into goal setting strategy and look forward to hearing your comments and feedback, especially about your progress.

Photography Equipment Reviews- 10 Cool Picture Viewers

Recently a friend of mine was planning a Photo Eurail Adventure. He said he was going to buy 4 or 5 more Compact Flash Cards, so that he would have enough room for all of his photos. "Eben," I said, "get a Multimedia Storage DVR. When you fill up a card just transfer your images to it." Then we really started to think of the possibilities. "You can even bring your entire photo collection with you on the trip to Europe. You may as well show off your artwork, instead of just talking about it. Put your Tunes, Movies and Lake Tahoe skiing videos on it." It was the perfect solution. He was flying back home before the trip, he could show everyone all of his photography and bring all of his music with him.

Monitor Technology Explained

Monitor types

8 Inch Tv Monitor

CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors

8 Inch Tv Monitor

CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors are a now archaic display technology that was popular even into the 21st century. A cathode ray tube contains multiple electron guns, which fire electrons through a vacuum onto phosphor "pixels". Three colours of phosphor "pixels" are present (red, green and blue), and deflection by a magnetic field determines which ones will be lit. Although colour reproduction and contrast were excellent in later models of CRT monitor, modern LCD monitors (see below) are vastly thinner and lighter, whilst providing outstanding contrast ratios, good colour reproduction and response times. A list of now-redundant terms related to CRT monitors can be found in the final section of this PC Monitors article.

LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors

LCD screens are the current standard of display for most PC monitors, TV screens and electronic devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones and MP3 players. LCD PC monitors usually contain two polarising filters with liquid crystal filled cells or pixels. A backlight creates light which passes through the first filter, whilst electrodes regulate a current which passes through the liquid crystals and determines their alignment. The electrodes regulate the alignment of the crystals, determining the light colour and intensity of the image.

OLED (organic light emitting diode) monitors

OLED (organic light emitting diode) is an emerging screen technology which is yet to make it into the PC monitor mainstream due mainly to high costs currently associated with OLED monitor manufacture. OLED monitors use the principle of electroluminescence; using materials which glow when a current is applied, rather than relying on a backlight. This means that the monitors are much thinner and lighter, have an unmatched contrast ratio, colour reproduction and response time and can even be made flexible. Although this technology isn't currently used on PC monitors, smaller screens such as those on high-end touch screen phones, digital cameras and the beautiful 11-inch Sony XEL-1 TV (featured in the video below) feature OLED technology.

PC monitor terminology

Monitor backlight

Backlights are used in LCD monitors to illuminate the liquid crystals, as explored previously. There are two main types of backlight. The most common type in the PC monitor is a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight, which does a very good job at illuminating the screen to various intensities.. CCFL lamps are good at illuminating the screen to various intensities, and in the case of WCG (wide colour gamut) CCFL lamps - provide a broad colour gamut of up to 96% NTSC colour space.

Some manufacturers use an alternative type of backlight, involving the use of coloured (red, green and blue) LEDs (light emitting diodes) to illuminate the screen. Because the intensity of LEDs can be individually controlled (as well as with high precision and evenness), variable contrast can be used across the screen and superior contrast can theoretically be obtained. LED backlights are also considerably more efficient, are mercury free and provide lower heat output than CCFL lamps. Using RGB LEDs also broadens the monitor's colour gamut considerably (taking it to up to 114% of the NTSC colour space).

An alternative technology is the use of highly efficient 'white' LEDs around the border of the screen (usually referred to as 'edge-lit'). A real advantage of edge-lit LED technology over any behind-the-screen backlighting is that you can create screens that are considerably thinner and lighter. The purity of light and responsiveness to various light intensities can also provide a contrast and perceived luminance advantage over CCFL backlighting, although the actual colour gamut is not typcially extended beyond that of regular CCFL lamps. Without a suitably high colour depth (as provided by PVA/IPS and other more expensive panels), it is worth nothing that a broad-gamut backlight offers little advantage.

Colour gamut

This is the range of colours, from the visible spectrum, that a PC monitor is capable of producing. The image below shows the colours of the visible spectrum, with triangles representing NTSC (national television system committee; i.e. the theoretical maximum colour gamut of images broadcast on TV) and the typical colour gamut of CCFL backlit monitors, white LED backlit monitors and red-green-blue (RGB) LED backlit monitors. Although not shown in the image, typical future OLED PC monitors will most likely be represented by a significantly larger triangle - representing an exceptionally broad colour gamut.

Colour depth

The colour depth refers to the number of colours a monitor can process and display, based on internal processing. Most modern monitors are twisted nematic (TN) panels.TN panels are capable of processing 6-bits per pixel (3x6= 18-bits in total, or 262,144 colours). Dithering is used to display a slightly different shade of a colour each refresh of the screen, and therefore the apparent colour depth approaches 24-bit colour (16.7 million colours). PVA and IPS LCD panels are capable of outputting 8-bits or even 10-bits per pixel, and can therefore transition 24-bit or 30-bit colour (although actual output will depend on the quality of the backlight as well). In the future, OLED monitors should surpass this colour depth, as the pixels emit light directly.

N.B. 32-bit colour, as used in Windows, is not a true colour depth. It represents 24-bit colour with an additional 8-bits of non-colour data (alpha, z, bump data etc.).

Contrast ratio

The contrast ratio is a measure of the relationship between the intensity of the brightest white and the darkest black a monitor can display. Because manufacturers of PC monitors seem to use their own 'unique' way of measuring the contrast ratio, however, figures are often overstated and not comparable to the figures used by other manufacturer. Additionally, some manufacturers have begun flinging about huge "dynamic contrast ratio" numbers as well. Whereas the static contrast ratio is a measure of the ratio of the darkest black to brightest white displayed on the monitor at any given time, dynamic contrast is a measure of the temporal intensity difference. This effect is often amplified by varying the intensity of individual backlighting elements. Different areas of the screen will therefore be illuminated to different intensity (this is especially effective with LED backlighting), resulting in a much broader contrast ratio. The main problem with how dynamic contrast ratios have been implemented so far is that the overall effect is unnatural and even painful to look at - most users will disable the dynamic contrast option on their monitor. Most monitors have poorly implemented their dynamic contrast ratios, making the viewing experience unpleasant - users will often disable this feature. Since OLED monitors have no backlight and the pixels emit light directly; insane contrast ratios will actually be meaningful and will look more natural without a backlight interfering.

Luminance or brightness

Luminance is measured in cd/m2 (candelas per sq. meter) and is an expression of the levle of light emitted by a PC monitor Usual values for modern moderns are around 250-300cd/m2, which are very respectable and more than adequate. LED-backlit monitors may have a luminance exceeding 350cd/m2 and PC monitors of the future, such as OLED monitors, will surely increase this figure further.

Display resolution

The display resolution of a PC monitor generally refers to the number of pixels displayed in the horizontal by vertical dimensions. For a CRT monitor, this number can be varied mechanically by the monitor itself and therefore the display resolution is variable. For an LCD or OLED monitor, the resolution is fixed by the number of pixels laid out horizontally and vertically inside the monitor, and is referred to as the optimal or native resolution.

Response time

The response time is an indication of the time, in milliseconds, for the pixels of an LCD or OLED monitor to transition from one state to another. A faster response time in a monitor means a more fluid image with less trailing or "ghosting", which used to be a problem with the earlier generations of LCD displays. Traditionally, the response time was indicative of the time it took for a PC monitor to transition from "on" (white) to "off" (black) state and then back again. In 2005, however, it was deemed more useful for manufacturers to state a "grey to grey" response time; the time it takes to transition from one shade of grey to another. This is more representative of a real-world scenario as a pixel will rarely switch from an on to an off state and back again.
The response times (grey-to-grey) of modern PC monitors are usually around 2-5ms. This makes them perfect for watching movies and playing games, and you'd be hard-pushed to notice any distracting trailing or ghosting. Despite this, the response times are being pushed even further as technology improves. OLED monitor response times, for example, are expected to be around 0.01ms or even lower.

Screen size

The screen size refers to the diagonal size of the screen, usually in inches, from the top of one corner to the opposite bottom corner. For CRT monitors, this measurement includes the casing of the PC monitor and another (lower) figure for the "viewable area". For LCD monitors, this figure traditionally only referred to the viewable area of the screen (i.e. inside the bezel) - but many manufacturers have reverted to measuring the entire screen size to bump up the numbers.

Aspect ratio

A measure of the horizontal by vertical screen size. Traditional square monitors have an aspect ratio of 5:4, whereas most widescreen PC monitors have an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10.

Viewing angle

This is the angle around which the screen can be viewed without the image becoming considerably altered.. Early LCD monitors suffered from fairly limited viewing angles, and even small off-centre viewing was impossible. Modern LCD monitors have much wider viewing angles, usually of around 120-170 degrees (perhaps slightly higher for PVA and IPS panels|even higher for PVA/IPS panels}) and screens of the future should be viewable from most angles in front of the screen without distortion.

Outdated technology

Refresh rate

For CRT monitors, refresh rate can determine the likelihood of your monitor giving you eyestrain and/or a headache. It is a measurement, in Hz, of the number of times pixels on the screen are drawn in a second. If the refresh rate is too low (generally below 85Hz) flickering ensues and the associated headaches and eyestrain follows. Although LCD monitors still have a "refresh rate", it is only important for specialist applications (for example 3D viewing using shutter glasses) and if you wish to disable v-sync without the commonly associated tearing. Because LCD monitors contain liquid crystals which merely act as shutters against a backlight, this flickering phenomenon does not occur, even if the refresh rate of the monitor is a seemingly low 60Hz.

Shadow mask

A sheet of thin metal with tiny holes in it is referred to as a shadow mask. This was a popular technology for traditional CRT monitors, where three electron guns would fire electrons through the holes and focus them at a specific point on the phosphor surface. Unwanted electrons are therefore shadowed and the phosphors which are lit up are precisely controlled.

Aperture grill

This was the technology of choice for Sony Trinitron CRT monitors. Electrons are fired through tiny vertical wires (which make up an aperture grill) and are focussed on the phosphor screen to illuminate it. This technology allowed a flat screen for a flat screen that is less likely to produce eyestrain.

Slot mask

Slot masks are a combination of aperture grills and shadow masks, and were a less common PC monitor technology. Slot mask monitors consist of vertically aligned slots rather than small holes, which improves brightness by increasing electron transmission.

Dot pitch

This is the distance, in millimetres, between two phosphors of the same colour. A screen with a lower dot pitch therefore gives a sharper image. The method of which dot pitch is measured differs between aperture grill and shadow mask monitors. For aperture grills it is the horizontal distance between two {like-coloured phosphor "stripes"|phosphor stripes of the same colour (and therefore sometimes referred to as 'stripe pitch'), whereas for shadow mask monitors it is the diagonal distance between two phosphor dots of the same colour.

Facial rejuvenation, including facelift, browlift, and laser surgery

There's been huge progress made in facial rejuvenation techniques since the days of the old stretched-out sort of facelift. We can now have a customized combination of procedures, some done at the same time, some done at different times.

8 Inch Tv Monitor

The three facial areas

8 Inch Tv Monitor

In today's approach to facial aging, the face is thought of as having 3 treatable areas:

· Upper face (the brow and upper eyelids)

· Mid face (lower eyelids, cheeks and nose)

· Lower face (jawline, mouth and neck)

SMAS facelifts

The term "Sub-Muscular Aponeurotic System" refers to the layers under the skin that consist of muscle and collagen (connective tissue). In a modern facelift, these are tightened as well as the skin, to create a firmer and more youthful-looking result. At the same time, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat.

Facelifts work on the cheeks, jawline and neck. An incision called the "S" incision is made on each side. It runs partly inside the hairline and partly in front of the ear.

A facelift takes between 2 and 3 hours to perform and can be done under general anesthesia or local with IV sedation. It can be done in a hospital or a doctor's surgical office.

Recovery is usually rather quick, with not much pain, although a pain medication will be prescribed if needed. The swelling subsides within days and the bruising fades in a few weeks.

The pinkness in the scars fades after a few months, leaving a narrow white line, most of which can be hidden by hair or makeup. Although the results are not permanent, they do last many years and most people don't feel the need for any further work for about 8 to 15 years or so.

Browlifts

As we age, the force of gravity pulls downward on our face and this droop can affect the eyebrows, which in turn affect the upper eyelids, pulling them downward and creating a tired look to the face.

Aging also brings crow's feet at the corners of the eyes and of course, frown wrinkles. And some of us have eyebrows that are positioned low over the eyes, just from our genetics.

A brow lift (forehead lift) takes 1 to 2 hours to perform and can be done in several ways.

Coronal procedure (the traditional browlift)

From an incision behind the hairline running over the top of the head ("coronal" means "like a crown"; think of Coronation), the skin is gently pulled upwards, the eyebrows along with it, and set into a new position. At the same time, excess fat and skin can be removed. If necessary, a corrugator excision can be performed at the same time, where the muscles which create frown lines can be modified or released to smooth the forehead. Then the incision is closed with sutures or clips and some cosmetic surgeons will apply a dressing and bandage.

This type of brow lift raises the hairline and heightens the forehead.

Endoscopic browlift

An endoscope is a very narrow, flexible, hollow tube with a light at the end. It's connected to a television monitor and the plastic surgeon uses this TV picture to guide his actions. Endoscopes are used for many surgeries now, but the endoscopic brow lift was the first one to be accepted widely. Endoscopic surgeries are much less invasive and stressful than traditional surgeries.

The endoscopic brow lift calls for several small incisions in the scalp (3 to 5, depending on what exactly is to be done), each an inch long or less. Through one of these, the cosmetic surgeon will insert an endoscope. Through another of the incisions, he inserts surgical instruments and carefully lifts the forehead skin to a new position. The eyebrows are lifted at the same time, giving the eyes a wider look.

As with the traditional brow lift, the plastic surgeon then closes the incision and usually dresses it, using a bandage to hold the dressings in place.

In this type of browlift, no skin is removed. So this is not the procedure of choice for a person with many horizontal brow wrinkles. But the small incisions leave very small scars, which makes it good for men whose hair is too thin to cover scars.

Temporal brow lift

The temporal browlift (also called a lateral lift or lateral brow lift) is a variation of the endoscopic brow lift. In this procedure, the small incisions are located a little further to the sides, nearer the temples, and the new position of the skin and underlying tissues has a slightly more slanted angle. It also lifts the cheeks a little, giving a more youthful line to the cheekbones.

Excess skin is removed, which lifts the outer ends of the eyebrows slightly, but doesn't lift the center ends. Crow's feet are also removed with this method. It can be done at the same time as an endoscopic brow lift and / or a facelift.

Corrugator muscle excision

The corrugator muscle is the one which squeezes the eyebrows together, forming frown wrinkles as we age. A corrugator excision is often performed along with a browlift and involves modifying or removing part of the corrugator muscle so that frown lines will not re-develop.

Direct browlift

This is a method for raising the eyebrows without affecting the hairline or working on frown lines or crow's feet. The incisions are right along the tops of the eyebrows and raise only the eyebrows themselves. The resulting scars are barely visible against the hair of the eyebrows.

Laser surgery

In conjunction with any of the above facial rejuvenation procedures, people often have laser surgery.

What is a laser?

A laser is a focused beam of light which can be precisely controlled by the cosmetic surgeon for resurfacing the skin. Lasers are very effective at removing such things as moles, fine wrinkles, spider veins, port wine stains, or mild scarring.

The beam can remove the upper layer of skin, the epidermis, leaving the next layer, the dermis, exposed and pink.

Then the laser power is lowered and the laser used to heat the dermis gently. This stimulates it to produce collagen fibers. (Collagen is a protein that's common in the body, and is produced any time the skin's integrity is damaged.) As the collagen heals the treated area, new skin grows which is softer and less wrinkled.

Laser resurfacing is done with a local anesthetic and if needed, also a sedative. Depending on what other procedures you're having done at the same time, a general anesthetic may be used.

The procedure takes anything from several minutes to an hour or more, according to how large an area is being treated.

Recovering from laser resurfacing

Afterwards, there'll be swelling and discomfort for perhaps a week or so, and there could be some oozing for a couple of weeks. The skin may be pink or red for several months as it regrows and recovers.

You'll need to avoid direct sunlight, and if you have to be outdoors, use a sunblock with an SPF of 25 or more. Also avoid moving your facial muscles as much as possible and use a moisturizer at least twice a day to keep your skin hydrated and supple.

Finding a good cosmetic surgeon

Since cosmetic surgery has become so popular in the last 10 years or so, some doctors have taken short cut training to take advantage of this at a disservice to the general public. You want a properly trained and experienced surgeon, not one who might gain his basic experience on you! Choose a plastic surgeon who's certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), and one who's a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

While you should by all means listen to your friends and acquaintances who may have had cosmetic surgery and want to recommend their doctor to you you should do your homework too, and check the doctor's credentials.

Some questions to ask when interviewing plastic surgeons

· Do you have hospital privileges, and if so, which hospitals?

· Can you do the procedure in the hospital if I want to?

· If you do surgery in other facilities, are they accredited?

· How many breast reductions have you done?

· Can I speak to some of your previous patients about their experience with it?
